Historic Football Match Marks Liberation of Khankendi
In a symbolic moment of triumph and reconciliation, the city of Khankendi, freed from Armenian occupation after 35 years, is set to host the first-ever football match between two Azerbaijani teams on December 21. Qarabag and MOIK (Army Sports Club) will clash on the revitalized stadium at 2 p.m., competing for a spot in the one-eighth finals of the Azerbaijan Football Cup.
The meticulous preparations for this historic encounter were finalized on the night of December 20-21. The stadium underwent a comprehensive transformation, with the spectator stands receiving a complete overhaul. The removal of seats adorned with the colors of the Armenian separatist flag marked a symbolic shift, replaced by seats proudly displaying the colors of the Azerbaijani national flag.
Newly installed screens now adorn the stadium, ready to display advertisements and messages. The electronic advertising demonstration system underwent thorough testing to ensure smooth operation. At the stadium entrance, bold declarations read "Qarabağ Azərbaycandır" (Karabakh is Azerbaijan), reaffirming the integral role of Khankendi in the nation's identity. The stadium lighting system, essential for evening matches, was also subject to a comprehensive update, enhancing the overall spectator experience.
Originally constructed in 1956 and named "Joseph Stalin," the arena underwent a renaming during the Soviet era, eventually receiving the name the "Central Stadium named after Stepan Shahumyan." Now, following extensive reconstruction, the stadium's capacity has been expanded to accommodate 15,000 spectators. The grand vision is for this revitalized sports facility in Khankendi to serve as the new home base for the Karabakh football club from Aghdam.
As the two Azerbaijani teams take the field, the historic match not only signifies the sporting pursuit of victory but also stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and reclamation of Azerbaijani heritage. The symbolism woven into the stadium's transformation mirrors the broader narrative of the region's history, as Azerbaijan embraces its past while forging a path toward a united and dynamic future.
