In Azerbaijan, about 4 thousand people with HIV
Over the entire period of testing and recording of HIV (1987) in Azerbaijan
3,720 people have been found infected, said at a press conference in connection with the International Day to Combat AIDS Acting Director of the National Center for Combating AIDS Esmira Almamedova.
She said 3,593 of the infected are citizens of Azerbaijan, and 127 are foreigners. Of the Azerbaijani citizens, 2,879 are men, and 714 women.
The number of those, who are at the stage of AIDS, is 1,098. 518 people died of the disease (510 - citizens of Azerbaijan).
For 11 months of the year in Azerbaijan there were revealed 453 new cases of HIV infection. 14 of them regard foreigners.
The largest number of infected patients still belongs to the so-called risk groups - drug users and prostitutes.
In connection with the International Day against AIDS UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for strengthening the fight against the disease and for paying particular attention to the prevention measures in order to prevent the infection in children. -02D-
