Intigam Aliyev Named Human Rights Defenders of Year

The President of Azerbaijan Legal Education Society Intigam Aliyev has been awarded the organization Civil Rights Defenders Honor Award Human Rights Defender of the Year.

The prize was awarded to the son of the human rights defender Najmin in Stockholm on April 7, as Intigam Aliyev could not leave the country because of his conviction.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested on Aug. 8, 2014 and sentenced to 7.5 years on charges of illegal business activities, misappropriation, and tax evasion. The Baku Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the trial court. Subsequently, the Supreme Court on the basis of the protest from the Prosecutor General decided on the conditional release of the human rights defender.

Intigam Aliyev denies all the charges against him and says he was arrested because of his human rights activities, in particular because of the aid in the administration of citizens' complaints to the European Court.

Amnesty International considers Intigam Aliyev a prisoner of conscience. -0-
