"Line of Defense" on the facts of human rights violations in May
Baku/03.06.21/Turan: The human rights organization "Line of Defense" published a report on human rights violations in the country in May 2021 on June 3. According to Rufat Safarov, the executive director of the organization, there were facts of pressure on critics of the authorities, physical violence against those arrested and torture. “Violations have been recorded in the area of political freedoms, personal integrity, fair trial, freedom of opinion, freedom of the media, and assembly,” Safarov said.
On May 3, a student rally was dispersed in front of the University of Economics, and the protesters were detained with the use of violence.
On May 5, prisoner blogger Aslan Gurbanov was placed in solitary confinement.
On May 5, Muslim Unity activists were not allowed to hold a ceremony to mark al-Qadr night in the month of Ramadan. The activists were brought to administrative responsibility.
The public is also not provided with information on the death of activist Bayram Mammadov in Turkey.
On May 7, a social demand protest in front of the May 28 metro station in Baku was violently suppressed.
On May 8, satirist Ibrahim Khudai was persecuted by believers for posting critical poems on social networks. Only one of the intruders was found.
On May 8, activists of the Musavat party were not allowed to hold a picket in front of the Russian embassy in Baku. The police used excessive force.
Referring to the situation in places of detention, Safarov called it “terrible”.
"Ten inmates in jail N 6 cut their veins in protest. Instead of investigating the cause, the prisoners were deprived of the right to send mail. Penitentiary policy in the country does not serve to correct convicts, and prisons are controlled by a group of officials," Safarov said.
According to him, the health of the former Prosecutor General Eldar Hasanov, who was arrested on May 22, has worsened. “The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Hasanov should be hospitalized in accordance with Article 39 of the European Convention on Human Rights. However, his treatment is still not carried out,” Safarov said.
He also said that in recent days there has been pressure on former political prisoner Ilkin Rustamzade and his sister.
Former political prisoner Orkhan Bakhyshli was also under pressure. --- 30C06 / 03-
