Mehman Huseynov filed a complaint with the Supreme Court
Baku / 15.05.17 / Turan: Blogger Mehman Huseynov appealed to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan for a sentence of imprisonment for two years. A lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan, the verdict to Huseynov is groundless, both from the point of view of national legislation and international conventions. The cassation appeal raises the issue of termination of criminal proceedings on justifiable grounds.
As for the torture of the blogger in the police, the appeals mechanisms in the country have already been exhausted and an appeal to the European Court is now being prepared. In this process, British lawyers are also involved. Let us recall that on March 3, 2017, by decision of the Surakhani court, Huseynov was sentenced to two years of imprisonment. Earlier, on January 9, he was abducted in the city center by policemen. He was kept in the 22nd police station of Nasimi district, accusing him of disobeying the police. Nasimi court fined him for 200 manats.
After leaving the police, Huseynov told about the torture and filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office. After that, Musa Musayev, the chief of the Nasimi district police, accused the blogger of slander and filed a lawsuit in court. On the basis of this particular claim, the blogger was imprisoned for a period of 2 years.
The defense sent a complaint to the court that the prosecutor's office did not initiate a criminal investigation into the facts of torture. However, the Sabail and the Court of Appeal did not respond to the complaint properly. Meanwhile, bloggers' colleagues are convinced that the real reason for the imprisonment of Mehman is his video report ridiculing Mehriban Aliyeva's appointment as vice president of the country.-05B-
