Men Accused of Spying for Iran Convicted

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes chaired by Rasim Sadikhov completed the trial of the residents of Lankaran Faig Gurbanov and Seymour Rzazade accused of spying for Iran.

Gurbanov was sentenced to 14 years in prison and Rzazade was sentenced to 13.

They were found guilty under Article 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code.

The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the two to 15 years in prison.

Gurbanov’s lawyer Anar Gasimli told Turan his client pleaded not guilty. The other defendant pleaded guilty.

Gasimli announced his intention to appeal to the Court of Appeal.

The trial of these individuals began November 25, 2014.

According to the investigators, Gurbanov collaborated with the Iranian Ettelaat intelligence officer named Bilal since 2013. Bilal gave orders to Gurbanov to collect secret information about Azerbaijan on the questions he was interested in.

Rzazade was also recruited by another member of Ettelaat named Ghafari and passed him information about the situation of believers in Lankaran.

Both were detained by the Ministry of National Security of Azerbaijan. -16d-
