Name of Khadija Ismayilova on Bracelets

Students of the University of Maryland collect money for making bracelets engraved with the names of the arrested journalists in the world. The purpose of the action is to inform the world public about the persecution of journalists for their publications. It is reported by Radio Azadlig with reference to the Associated Press.

Students of the University of Maryland School of Journalism implement the initiative in the framework of the campaign "Press without handcuffs" under the leadership of Dana Priest, correspondent for Washington Post, a professor of journalism, winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

As the representative of the project Rosemaru Ostman said, income from the sale of wristbands will be handed over to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

"Raising funds to assist 221 journalists, Dana and her team want to show how dearly costs the preparation of news and the importance of the truth for a free and prosperous society," said Ostman.

Among the journalists, whose names will be engraved on the bracelets, there will be the Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

Besides it, this list includes Ammar Abdulrasol (Bahrain), Mahmoud Abu Zeid (Egypt), Reeyot Alemu (Ethiopia), Bheki Makhubu (Swaziland), Ta Pnong Tan (Vietnam), Jason Rezaian (Iran), Yusif Ruzimiradov (Uzbekistan) and Ilhama Tohti (China).

* Khadija Ismayilova was arrested on December 5, 2014 on charges of incitement of the journalist Tural Mustafayev to a suicide attempt. However, on February 13, prosecutors filed new charges on three articles - 179.3.2 (embezzlement in large size), 192.2.2 (illegal business with the extraction of a large income) and 308.2 (abuse of power, resulting in grave consequences) of the Criminal Code.

Ismayilova denies all the charges and says they are politically motivated. Amnesty International recognizes her a "prisoner of conscience". -1606D-
