New Earthquake in Southern Azerbaijan
New tremors were recorded in the evening on August 15 in northern Iran near the city of Ahar in the province of East Azerbaijan, where the first strong earthquake occurred on August 11. Yesterday's tremor was 5 points, according to the Iranian news agency Mehr. No casualties or damage have been reported yet.
Shocks near Ahar have occurred daily for almost a week. According to seismologists, the earthquake epicenter is located at depths ranging from 10 to 14 km.
On August 11 the earthquake destroyed more than 60 villages, killing more than 300 people and injuring thousands.
Tremors were felt in Iran and in the southern region of Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan. -02D-
