Oktay Gyulaliyev: Authorities Fear Activation of Society
Baku / 04.07.19 / Turan: Coordinator of the Committee against Torture and Corruption Oktay Gyulaliyev spoke in an interview with Voice of America about the goals of the Solidarity Marathon and police intervention in this event.
When asked whether they managed to collect the necessary amount of money during the Marathon, Gyulaliyev said the marathon lasted only one hour and was interrupted by police intervention. However, it continues now individually.
The funds were collected to pay fines for protesters. The required amount is 11 thousand manat. In an hour they managed to collect 3,080 manat, said the human rights activist, adding that the fundraising continues and the amount will be collected.
"We condemn the interference of the police, as it is against the law and freedom of assembly. The blockade of the headquarters of the Musavat party, where the Marathon was held, and the fact that police officers illegally entered the hall, was absurd and illegal," said Gyulaliyev. Authorities fear activation of the civil society, opposition and just ordinary people, he added.
On the question of what the authorities claim about guarantees of human rights and freedoms, Gyulaliyev answered that disruption of the Solidarity Marathon on June 28, the blockade of the office of a political party, and the expulsion of its members from the building speak about the state of human rights in Azerbaijan.
Another evidence of the horrific state of rights and freedoms in the country is the Ganja case, where there have been mass arrests of innocent people on charges of anti-state speeches. The arrested were brutally tortured, and several people were shot dead, ostensibly when providing armed resistance.
"Later it turns out that these people were innocent. What rights and freedoms can we talk about?
I believe that Azerbaijan is grossly and massively violating fundamental rights and freedoms and this opinion is shared by numerous international organizations," the human rights activist said. -03B-
