Police Decide to Look for Arif Mammadov Two Years after Courts Decision?
Baku / 29.06.17 / Turan: The Main Police Department of Baku posted on its website information about the search for the former diplomat Arif Mammadov and ex-press secretary of the State Commission for Student Admission (SCSA) Elnur Naghizadeh.
The dossier on Mammadov states that he is wanted on the charge provided for in Article 179.3.2 (misappropriation or embezzlement of a large amount) of the Criminal Code. Naghizadeh is charged under Article 178.3.2 (fraud committed with damage in a large amount) of the Criminal Code.
It is noteworthy that the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan announced in 2015 that Mammadov was arrested in absentia with a measure of restraint and an appeal was sent to the National Bureau of Interpol to declare him wanted.
In the years 2000-2006 Mammadov headed the representation of Azerbaijan to the EU in Brussels, and in 2007-2012 he headed the Permanent Mission to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Since 2013, he was a representative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in the EU.
The criminal prosecution of Mammadov began after he criticized officials for the fire in the Binaghadi district of Baku, which killed 15 people in May 2015.
According to information from foreign diplomatic sources, Mammadov, being the representative of Azerbaijan to the EU and the Council of Europe, was in favor of solving problems with human rights and maintaining a liberal political course.
Mammadov himself did not comment on the message on the website of the Baku police about the search for him. -D06-
