Political Prisoners Monitoring Center Condemns Verdict on Orkhan Bakhyshly
Baku / 19.09.18 / Turan: The Political Prisoners Monitoring Center (PPMC) condemned the conviction of Orkhan Bakhyshly, the youth activist of the Popular Front Party (PFPA).
He was sentenced on September 18 by the Baku Grave Crimes Court to 6 years in prison on charges of illicit drug trafficking on a large scale.
As stated by the Center, "the preliminary investigation and the trial were conducted with gross violations of procedural legislation".
"In fact, there was no independent hearing at the trial, and the verdict was drawn up on the basis of the primary protocol of the investigative body.
As with all political trials, defense applications were rejected, and the judge frankly supported the prosecution," said Elshan Hasanov, the head of the Center.
"We former political prisoners categorically protest against the unfair verdict on Orkhan Bakhyshly and consider the verdict politically motivated. We are convinced that Orkhan Bakhyshly was convicted on a fabricated charge in order to punish him for taking part in opposition protests and criticizing the authorities. We demand the cancellation of the unfair sentence," the statement says.
PPMC was created by a group of former "prisoners of conscience" in the autumn of 2014. The organization is headed by the human rights activist Elshan Hasanov. -06B--

In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
