Presentation of a special issue of the magazine "Monitor"

Baku/02.03.18/Turan: On the 13th anniversary of the murder of the editor-in-chief of Monitor magazine Elmar Huseynov, a special issue of the magazine with the same name was presented. The magazine found articles of public and political figures devoted to the journalist, memories of him, as well as an article by Elmar Huseynov translated into Azerbaijani.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence in memory of Elmar, who was killed on March 2, 2005 at the door of his house by shots from a pistol of a hired killer. None of the organizers and perpetrators of the murder was punished.

The founder of the special issue Ismail Islamoglu said that the purpose of the publication is a tribute to the memory of Elmar Huseynov, who devoted his life to Monitor magazine - the phenomenon of independent Azerbaijani journalism.

"At first we decided to create a site monitortv.az, but it was first blocked, and then completely destroyed, after that we had to change the domain. Then we decided to release the Monitor magazine, but here we also faced certain difficulties. Despite this, the special issue was published," Islamoglu said.

"The articles printed in the Monitor magazine answered the agenda, they remain relevant, to this day," said Mehman Aliyev, director of the Turan news agency. He stressed that Elmar was remarkable for his far-sightedness, foresaw the current crisis and tried to warn the authorities about it so that they would abandon the wrong policy.

Famous media expert and journalist Gulu Maharramli stressed the role of independent journalism, a representative of which was Huseynov. "To strengthen statehood and independence, public control over power is necessary. This is what Elmar was doing. He is a bright page in the history of our journalism," said Maharramli.

Avaz Zeynalli, the editor-in-chief of the website "Khural", called Elmar the most important symbol of Azerbaijani journalism, whose business continues and will inevitably lead to the victory of the idea of ​​press independence.

The participants talked about the role of Elmar Huseynov in the fight against corruption and arbitrariness, incompetence and other negatives. At the event, a video about Elmar Huseynov was demonstrated. -0--
