ReAl Marks Fourth Anniversary of Arrest of Its Leader
On Saturday at the headquarters of the Civil Movement Republican Alternative (ReAl), the Open Letter Day was celebrated, dedicated to the fourth anniversary of the arrest of the ReAl Chairman, Ilgar Mammadov.
From 10:00 in the morning the members of ReAl, citizens, activists, and civil society representatives wrote letters to Ilgar Mammadov, in which they expressed heartfelt wishes for his speedy release from prison.
Addressing the meeting, ReAl Board members Erkin Gadirli, Natig Jafarli and others noted that four years of unlawful arrest did not break Ilgar Mammadov. The authorities did not reach another goal, to weaken the movement, either. “Ilgar Mammadov’s fidelity to Republican ideas and principles of the politician further increased the public popularity of ReAl, which will soon become a mass party,” Erkin Gadirli said.
Ilgar Mammadov was arrested on February 4, 2013 on charges of organizing mass disorder in the Ismayilli region. He was sentenced to seven years. The European Court of Human Rights acknowledged the arrest of Ilgar Mammadov as politically motivated and decided that he has to be released. – 08C-
