Religious Activist Faces Toughened Detention Conditions

Baku / 01.10.18 / Turan: Jahad Babakishizadeh, the activist of the Muslim Unity movement, convicted under the Nardaran events, gets tougher conditions of detention. Today, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the decision to transfer him to the Gobustan closed prison for a period of three years.

Babakishizadeh was arrested during the special police operation in the village of Nardaran in November 2015, when he was only 18 years old. He was convicted together with a group of religious activists led by the leader of Muslim Unity, Taleh Bagirzadeh and sentenced to 14.5 years of imprisonment on charges of an attempted violent change of the constitutional order and illegal storage of weapons,

The leadership of Prison No. 12, where Babakishizadeh is serving his sentence, petitioned for toughening the terms of his punishment. The administration explained this with the fact that he was reprimanded 9 times and kept in a punishment cell.

However, the convict himself stated in court that he was punished on false pretenses. Nevertheless, the Baku Court of Appeal rejected Babakishizadeh's complaint.

Thus, in a few days he will be sent to the Gobustan prison with severer conditions of detention. -06D--
