Representatives of the Ombudsman visited Ikrama Rahimov in jail
Baku/16.08.19/ Turan: Members of the National Preventive Group under the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan acting under the optional protocol of the Convention against Torture visited the Baku detention - 1 without prior warning.
According to the press service of the Ombudsman"s apparatus, distributed on Thursday, members of the group, which included the doctor, held confidential meetings with a number of accused persons, investigated their appeals and questions raised by them. Some issues were resolved locally.
Ikram Rahimov was also received and heard, about which some media reported that he refused to eat, the report further says.
"Ikram Rahimov announced the start of a hunger strike because of the lawsuit against him, and wrote to the Ombudsman asking for appropriate assistance. He was placed in the medical unit of the institution and is under the supervision of doctors," the message further states.
Rahimov"s statement was sent by the Ombudsman to the Baku Court of Appeal to take it into account, the report emphasizes. However, the press release does not specify the date of the visit. On August 15, the Prison Service also confirmed the fact that Rahimov went on hunger strike.
* Rahimov was detained on October 26, 2018, charged with extortion by threats and arrested. Before his arrest, Rahimov said that he was being persecuted because of criticism of the assistant to the president Ali Hasanov. On June 12, the court sentenced him to 5.5 years in prison. On August 7, a preliminary hearing was held in the Baku Court of Appeal in the case of Rahimov. The defense requested a second judicial investigation, new interrogations of witnesses and victims due to falsification of their testimonies in the trial court. The lawyer also asked to appoint a re-examination of the audio recording of Rahimov's telephone conversations for the same reason. However, the applications were not granted, and the next meeting was scheduled for August 21. Rahimov in a courtroom said in protest that he was on a hunger strike. -06D-
