Sentence on Mamed Ibrahim Filed an Appeal

The Baku Appeal Court today started hearing complaints from the advisor to the chairman of the Popular Front Party Mamed Ibrahim, sentenced to three years in prison on charges of hooliganism.

The lawyer Fariz Namazly put forward three requests: to change the preventive measure, to consider the appeal to conduct re-trial investigation and to let Ibrahim sit with his lawyer.

All these applications were rejected and the examination of the merits is scheduled for May 13.

Namazly told Turan that he, along with his colleague and the client, would discuss whether they should submit an appeal against the preliminary hearing in the court or not.

* Ibrahim was arrested on September 30 last year on charges of disorderly conduct (221.1). The complaint was filed by Mikail Guliyev, a former member of the PFPA. Subsequently, this article was reclassified to a heavier charge on article 221.2.2, on which Ibrahim faced up to five years in prison. During the trial at first instance all the prosecution witnesses confirmed Ibrahim's innocence and no use of force against those who were consequently recognized as victims. Ibrahim also denied the charges, saying he is being persecuted for his opposition political activity. Nevertheless, Narimanov Court on March 15 admitted Ibrahim guilty and sentenced him to 3 years in prison. Human rights organizations have recognized Ibrahim a political prisoner. -06b--
