Situation with Afgan Sadigov remains unclear
Baku/25.01.21/Turan: The head of the Azel.tv website, Afgan Sadigov, who is on hunger strike for 82 days, fell into a coma, his wife Sevinj Sadigova claims.
“Since the second half of January 21, Afghan has been in a coma. He fell asleep and did not wake up, and the prisoner who was in the same ward in the prison hospital called doctors. Afgan was connected to the device. They told me that he woke up, but I do not believe,” Sadigova told Turan.
Doctors at the Medical Institution of the Ministry of Justice refused her requests to speak with her husband on the phone.
“There is a schedule by which Afghan can call home. The doctor said that if he does not call, then health does not allow. If he is not in a coma, let him say on the phone that he is conscious,” Sadigova continued.
Currently, there are no patients in the medical institution in a coma, Iftikhar Gurbanov, deputy head of the Main Medical Department of the Ministry of Justice, told the Azerbaijani service of the Voice of America. He promised to make inquiries and provide information about the journalist’s health, but later he was unavailable.
Representatives of the Ombudsman visited Afgan Sadigov at the Medical Institution of the Ministry of Justice. An employee of this department Vugar Heydarov said that Sadigov was conscious.
“On behalf of the Ombudsman, we check his health every day. We spoke to him today. He speaks freely, but he is not able to move independently. He has lost a lot of weight and demands a fair review of his case,” Heydarov noted, confirming that Sadigov is continuing his hunger strike. Therefore, he is injected with nutrients.
Referring to his wife's statement about the impossibility of contact by phone, Heydarov said that according to his information, there are no restrictions on telephone calls.
“We will find out, but Afghan Sadigov himself did not complain about the restrictions on visits and telephone conversations with his family,” Heydarov said.
* The head of Azel.TV Afgan Sadigov was arrested on charges of extortion through threats in May this year. On November 3, the court sentenced him to seven years in prison. Since November 4, he went on a hunger strike in protest, considering the sentence unfair.-0-

On a brisk November evening, the residents of Baku gathered along the waterfront of the Caspian Sea, stunned by what appeared to be the washed-up body of a colossal whale. At 16 meters long, the creature’s seemingly lifeless form and pungent odor left many convinced they were witnessing an ecological tragedy. By that night, however, the mysterious visitor had departed, loaded onto a cargo platform and whisked away to the airport.
