State Commission to Investigate Cause of Fire Should Include Representatives of NGOs and Media
Yesterday the Committee to Protect Civil Society (CPCS) discussed the situation around the fire in the 16-storey building at Azadlig Avenue.
According to a member of the Committee, a human rights activist Elshan Hasanov, the meeting noted the need for inclusion of civil society and the media in the state commission to investigate the causes of the fire to ensure its transparency.
CPCS urged to prohibit the use of wall building materials made of polyurethane, condemned the inaction of the authorities after a similar fire in Sumgait two years ago and in the Khatai district of Baku in April this year.
* CPCS was created in 2009, when the first wave of reactionary amendments to the law on NGOs took place. Then it included about 100 independent NGOs, including organizations whose leaders are now under arrest. Currently, due to the criminal prosecution of many NGOs and arrests of the leaders of some of them, about 20 activists are actively involved in CPCS. -05C06-
