Supreme Court Rejected Appeal of Convicted Members of Former Special Police Force

On March 14, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan rejected the cassation appeal of members of the former Special Police Force, Elchin Amiraslanov, Safa Poladov and Arif Kazimov, sentenced to life-long imprisonment. The convicts asked to replace the sentence by 20 years of imprisonment.

Recall that all three were convicted for participation in the March 1995 events, when there were armed clashes between the Special Police Force and the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. Then the Special Police Force and its commander, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Rovshan Javadov, were accused of attempting to seize power. During the fighting, dozens of people were killed, including Javadov, and the survivors were sentenced to long terms.

Some of the convicts were pardoned, and some others stayed in prison for long terms. Amiraslanov, Poladov and Kazimov are the last ones, who are in prison. Previously, lower courts rejected their appeals to change their punishment term. -16D-
