Supreme Court Upholds Verdict on Intigam Aliyev
The Supreme Court chaired by Gulzar Rzayeva ended February 24 consideration of the cassation appeal of the convicted lawyer, the head of the Legal Education Society Intigam Aliyev.
The lawyer Javad Javadov, as well as at the previous meeting on January 26, reiterated that the lower courts did not provide an objective judicial investigation and violated the right of Intigam Aliyev to a fair trial guaranteed by Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The lawyer asked the court to terminate the criminal proceedings on grounds of acquittal.
However, the prosecutor Orhan Damirchi insisted on "proof of guilt" for Intigam Aliyev.
After a brief meeting, the Supreme Court announced the rejection of the complaint of the human rights activist.
The defense intends to file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights.
According to the lawyer Javad Javadov, on the two previous complaints from Aliyev ECHR has already completed the communication, and the issue is in the process of decision-making.
* Intigam Aliyev was arrested on August 8, 2014 on charges of tax evasion, abuse, illegal entrepreneurship and embezzlement.
On April 22, 2015 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced him to 7.5 years in prison. On July 21 the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the verdict.
Amnesty International has recognized Intigam Aliyev "prisoner of conscience". -06C--
