On 18 December the State Security Service (SSS) in cooperation with the State Customs Committee and State Border Service prevented contraband export of gold bullion and goods weighing 2,145 kg, according to the SSS report. The operation resulted in detain of five citizens of Azerbaijan - F.Allahverdiev, Mammadov, Rahimov, Huseynov, and E.Seidov. They were detained at the customs checkpoint Bilasuvar (border with Iran.) On December 25, an Embraer 190 passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL), on a Baku–Grozny flight, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan’s Consul General in Aktau, Ayxan Suleymanlı, stated that the plane had 67 people onboard, including crew members, 38 of whom died. According to him, 26 of the deceased were Azerbaijani citizens.
