Tear gas was used in the courtroom
Baku/15.08.19/Turan: A confrontation between the security forces and the relatives of the defendants began today in the Baku Appeal Court during the announcement of the decision on the case of the next group of defendants on the Ganja events.
Despite the court reclassified the accusation to Maarif Hajiyev, Ruslan Hasanov, Nizami Akperov, Togrul Verdiev, Seymur Aliyev, Shakhlar Rzayev, Tural Bayramov, Kamal Maharramov, Araz Hasanov and Orhan Yagnaliev. 315.2 (the use of violence against a police representative dangerous to health) by 315.1 (the use of violence against a police representative) of the Criminal Code and reduced the sentence to 4-4.5 years in prison (the trial court sentenced to 7-9 years in prison) the verdict called indignation of the defendants and their relatives, demanding an acquittal.
The latter began to scream and turn over the seats in the courtroom.
Prison officers began to force the protesters out of the hall, using tear gas. Relatives of the convicts continued the protest in the courtyard. Additional police forces were brought in to reassure the protesters.
Relatives were pushed away from the courthouse. No one was detained.
* On July 3, 2018 an attempt was made on Elmar Veliyev, the then head of the city of Ganja. Ganja native Yunis Safarov wounded him and the bodyguard of the head of the city.
After that, a protest rally in front of the Ganja administration building against Veliyev was scheduled for July 10 on social networks. On the same day, the Interior Ministry reported riots in Ganja, during which two police officers were killed. Following this, mass arrests were carried out among believers and others.
On July 31, 2019, the Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov at a meeting in this department said that in connection with the assassination attempt on E. Veliyev, 29 members of an organized criminal group were prosecuted, 11 more were put on the international wanted list.
On the events of July 10, the investigation completed, and eight lawsuits against 60 people were sent to the courts. The defendants were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment.
On August 9, the Court of Appeal released four defendants in the case, reducing their sentences. -21D--

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony.
