The Center of defense of political prisoners
The Working Group on Political Prisoners (160 List), whose founders are Leyla Yunus, Ogtay Gyulalyev and Elshan Hasanov decided to transform it into a Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners (SMMM). The decision was taken at a meeting on January 27 due to the need for a more systematic and effective work to protect the rights of political prisoners. Participants of the meeting expressed serious concern over increasing political repression and the increase in the number of political prisoners in the country.
The structure of the SMMM includs Mehman Aliyev (Director of the Information Turan agency), Eldaniz Guliyev (Chairman of the Association of Intelligentsia), Rovshan Ahmadli (chairman of the Islamic Resistance Movement for Karabakh), Avaz Zeynalli (chief editor of "Khural" newspaper), Hilal Mammadov (human rights activist), Thale Khasmamedov (human rights activist).
Coordinator of the SMMM has been elected Ogtay Gyulalyev, responsible for International Relations - Leyla Yunus. Rotation of coordinator will be held every three months.
The meeting updated the list of political prisoners. Abulfaz Bunyadov, the arrested in the Nardaran case was excluded from the list for "Nardaran case" because he was arrested. The names of 8 persons were added: the arrested during a protest in the Bilasuvar region of December 22, 2016, refugees from Jabrayil region - Ulvi Guliyev Ilkin Iskenderov, Jalal Guliyev, Zaur Fahruzlu, Gyulaga Almamedov, arrested on the "Nardaran case" Faili Shakhbazov, and the journalists Afghan Sadikhov and Ikram Rahimov.
Currently, the list of the SMMM includes 167 political prisoners.-0—
