The Court of Appeal left the PFPA activist in custody
Baku/21.09.23/Turan: On September 21, the Baku Court of Appeal did not satisfy the defense's complaint against the refusal to transfer Elkhan Aliyev, a functionary of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, to house arrest, lawyer Nemat Kerimli said. He called the court's decision unfounded.
"The preliminary investigation into the case of Nemat Kerimli has already been completed. That is, all grounds for keeping Elkhan Aliyev in custody have been eliminated. The damage in question has also been compensated. Nevertheless, Elkhan Aliyev was kept in custody," Kerimli said. According to him, now the defense will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.
*Elkhan Aliyev was detained on the afternoon of July 26 by employees of the Sabunchi District Police Department of Baku. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that two other people, Yusif Aliyev and Vafadar Akhundov, were also detained together with Aliyev.
According to the version of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, all three are suspected of selling a land plot in the village of Nardaran using forged documents. The case is under three articles - fraud with large-scale damage (Article 178.3.2), illegal production of a document conferring rights (Article 320.1) and intentional use of false documents (Article 320.2 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan), initiated at the request of a citizen who was the buyer of the plot.
Before his detention, Aliyev distributed a video in which he stated the possibility of committing a provocation against him. On July 27, the Sabunchi District Court chose a preventive measure of arrest for a period of 3 months against Aliyev. Human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner. ---06B---

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
