The fate of two NMA activists remains unknown

Baku / 05.24.19 / Turan: Lawyer Yaver Huseyn still failed to clarify the fate of two members of the board of the People"s Movement of Azerbaijan (NMA) Ilyas Abdullyev and Yaver Mikayilov, who were detained on 18 May.

The lawyer has reason to believe that they are contained in the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

However, he cannot receive official information.

"I don"t know whether charges have been brought against my clients or not. For several days now I have been trying to get information about the fate of the detainees in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General"s Office. But I cannot get an official response from these departments about the place where my clients are being held and the measures taken against them. I appealed to the Narimanov District Court in order to clarify the fate of the detainees through judicial review. However, the court still refuses to consider the appeal," the lawyer said.

The NMA previously announced mass detentions of the organization"s activists on May 18-19 in connection with the upcoming rally on May 25.

After the municipality did not allow the meeting, the detainees were released except for Abdullayev and Mikayilov.

The authorities do not respond to allegations of detention of NMA activists.

* The NMA was established on January 26, 2019 in this structure, established on the initiative of the ex-head of the Interior Ministry, chairman of Iskender Hamidov, included: the Classic Popular Front party, the National Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (leader Mirmahmud Miralioglu), the Umid party (Igbal Agazade), the Democratic Party (Sardar Jalaloglu), the Citizens and Development Party (Ali Aliyev), the White Party (Tural Abbasly), the Great Azerbaijan Party (leader Elshad Musayev), a number of other small parties, and also public activists and intellectuals .-- 03B06-
