The Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (IRFS) demand the release of all political prisoners
Baku/19.01.19/Turan: The 16 March limited release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan leaves many others in prison and is undermined by the ongoing arrests and imprisonment of activists, the Institute for Reporters" Freedom and Safety (IRFS) said today. Azerbaijan"s international partners should demand the release of all political prisoners and an end to repression of civil society.
The IRFS considers the last decree of Ilham Aliyev of 16 March, pardoning fifty political prisoners, as a cynical attempt by the authorities to extract political favour at the international level in order to reduce criticism and threats of sanctions against them. IRFS calls for the immediate release of all political prisoners, including journalists Afgan Mukhtarly, Seymur Hezi, Araz Guliyev, Ziya Asadli and Elchin Ismayilli.
IRFS urges the EU to suspend all negotiations around the treaty on strategic cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan until all political prisoners are released and the state guarantees all fundamental human rights. -06D-
