The peace treaty should indicate the belonging of Karabakh to Azerbaijan - expert
Baku/07.04.22/Turan: Meetings of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Brussels, mediated by the President of the EU Council Charles Michel, is a positive fact. Political analyst Azer Gasimli said this in his commentary to Turan.
“This is positive in terms of the need to take the process out of Russia's control. In this case, Azerbaijan and Armenia will get closer and the likelihood of peace in the region will increase,” Gasimli said. However, he is not sure that Baku is interested in removing Moscow from the process.
After the start of the war in Ukraine, Azerbaijan still adheres to the “balance” policy. Thus, during the voting in the UN and the Council of Europe, which condemned the actions of Moscow, Azerbaijan did not take part at all.
“It is not known how Ilham Aliyev will behave, what steps he will take. Will he act in accordance with the agreements reached in Brussels? The same applies to Armenia, because Moscow has enough levers of pressure on Armenia,” Gasimly said.
The peace process could be harmed by violations of the ceasefire after the Brussels meeting. He believes that there may be provocations on the part of Russian peacekeepers.
As for Armenia's statement that it recognized the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan back in 1991, this is a trick. The Armenians mean that they recognized Azerbaijan without Nagorno-Karabakh. Lavrov expressed this position at one time. The peace agreement should state that Armenia recognizes Karabakh as the territory of Azerbaijan in order to avoid any manipulation.
At the same time, the document may indicate that the security of the Armenian population can be discussed together with Azerbaijan. There can be no talk of any status, the issue should be discussed within the framework of cohabitation, Gasimly believes.—16/06B-

By that night, however, the mysterious visitor had departed, loaded onto a cargo platform and whisked away to the airport.
