The Supreme Court rejected the appeal of "Siyazan prisoners"
Baku/17.07.18/Turan: On 17 July the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan rejected the appeal of the convicts on the "Siyazan case" - Zaur Shakyarov, Joshgun Bagishov, Nizami Ganiev and Muslim Asimov, and upheld the verdict. According to the relatives of the convicts, lawyer Elchin Sadigov asked in a cassation appeal to stop the criminal case on justifiable grounds. Let's remind that on January 12, 2016 in the city of Siyazan in 95 km to the north of Baku protests were held against the rise in prices for bread and flour after the devaluation of manat.
In the district administration, protesters were promised that their requirements will be met, however, arrests were made at night. On July 13, people again gathered in front of the district administration, demanding the release of the detainees. After that, new arrests were made.
A total of 55 people were detained, 11 of whom were brought to trial
and were sentenced from 2 to 6 years in prison on charges of destroying property, hooliganism, illegal possession of weapons, violation of public order, illegal possession of drugs and resistance to the police. Local human rights defenders recognized all convicts as political prisoners.
Zaur Shekerov and Muslim Azimov were sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment, Joshgun Bagishev and Nizami Ganiev to 4 years in prison.-06D-

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
