Trade Union Activist Afiyaddin Mamedov Begins Hunger Strike in Prison
Afiyaddin Mamedov, chairman of the trade union NGO “Workers’ Table Confederation,” has launched an indefinite hunger strike in prison to protest what he describes as worsening social conditions and the arrests of citizens in Azerbaijan, his family said on Friday.
Mamedov’s hunger strike was announced on the confederation’s social media page and confirmed to independent news agency Turan by his relatives. His family noted that he suffers from health issues, raising concerns about his condition in detention.
Mamedov was arrested in September 2023 and sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of intentional grievous bodily harm, illegal possession of a bladed weapon, and hooliganism. He has denied all charges, claiming he is being persecuted for his political activism.
Rights groups have previously raised concerns about the treatment of activists in Azerbaijan, while the government maintains that law enforcement actions are carried out in accordance with legal procedures.
