Trial against Human Rights Activist Ilgar Nasibov Appointed for November 5

In Nakhchivan City Court on October 27 under the chairmanship of Mehman Allahverdiyev a preparatory meeting was held on the case against the human rights activist Ilgar Nasibov.

Recall that Nasibov was brutally beaten in the office of the Resource Center by Farid Askerov and others on August 21. He suffered multiple fractures and injuries. Only two weeks later, criminal proceedings were filed under article 127.1 (deliberate infliction of serious damage to health) and Askerov was involved as an accused.

But later Askerov filed a counter-claim that Nasibov allegedly also beat him, and then, the human rights activist was also prosecuted.

Nasibov considers absurd the accusation against him, because he was beaten until he lost consciousness, and he could not harm the health of Askerov. On the other hand, if Asgerov was really hurt, why did he complain just a month later?

During the preparatory meeting Nasibov declined the state attorney. The judge appointed the beginning of the proceedings on the merits for 5 November, reported Nasibov’s spouse, head of the Regional Resource Centre for Democracy and NGO Malahat Nasibova. She is attracted to the investigation as a witness.

Recall that on November 4 the complaint from Nasibov about his beating will be considered.

In this case, the human rights defender is forbidden to leave Nakhchivan and he cannot get effective medical care in Baku.

Until now Ilgar’s fractures of facial bones have not been healed, and there is a need for surgical intervention. The left side of his face has got numb and he needs physiotherapy.

The Nasibov spouses are actually trapped in Nakhchivan.

Note that unlike in previous years, the representatives of the Western diplomatic missions are in no hurry to visit Nakhchivan to monitor the trial against the only human rights defenders in the region.

Note that the Nasibov spouses are actually the last civil society activists continuing human rights activities. -06B-
