Vice Admiral Sultanov Awaiting Sentencing
In the trial of the former commander of the Navy of Azerbaijan, Vice Admiral Shahin Sultanov the accused will present his final speech on January 19. The sentencing is also possible.
The court session is scheduled for 15:00 in the Nasimi District Court.
The prosecutor asked to sentence Sultanov, who is accused of embezzling state funds, to 13 years in prison.
The lawyer Telman Abdiyev in an interview with Turan said the accusations are unfounded. According to the lawyer, the charges against Sultanov during the ongoing two-year trial were not confirmed.
Abdiyev noted that during the trial serious contradictions and discrepancies in the testimony of over 200 witnesses were revealed.
According to him, forensic experts of the Center acknowledged that the expert opinion on the embezzlement and damage to the state was issued without any research - only on the basis of certificates of the military prosecutor's office.
As a result, the court invalidated these findings and appointed a re-examination. The materials of the re-examination confirmed that the state had not received any damage.
The lawyer said it was confirmed that the indictment drawn up by the military prosecutor was false. Therefore, the proposal for a sentence of 13 years imprisonment is contrary to logic and common sense.
The defense has asked the court to justify the Vice Admiral and hopes for justice of the court, the lawyer said.
Sultanov was arrested in April 2014. In December of the same year he was transferred to house arrest. -06D-
