Armenia is unlikely to be ready to sign a peace agreement
Baku/25.10.21/Turan: On October 22, Armenian media reported that on November 9 the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will sign two documents in Moscow. According to the report, the first document concerns the delimitation and demarcation of the state border between the two countries. Thus, Baku and Yerevan recognize the borders and territorial integrity of each other according to the maps of the General Staff of the USSR Ministry of Defense. The second document concerns the opening of communications in the region, including automobile corridors between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan.
This information was confirmed by RIA Novosti. The agency, citing its own sources, reported that a trilateral meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia - Ilham Aliyev, Nikol Pashinyan and Vladimir Putin - could take place in Moscow in the first decade of November, and after the talks, a trilateral statement is expected to be signed.
“Yes, such a meeting is expected on November 8-9 in Moscow,” the source said. According to the source, the signing of trilateral statements is expected at the meeting. But is Armenia ready for this?
Political observer Rauf Mirkadyrov answers these and other questions in the "Difficult Question" program.
He believes that the signing of a document on the delimitation of borders is possible, since it is not so difficult. Delimitation is made on maps - an approximate border line is determined. But, with demarcation, it will be more difficult, since it is carried out directly on the ground. This is a longer and more difficult process.
“Most likely, a working group will be created to deal with these issues. However, it should be understood that delimitation and demarcation of borders is directly related to the recognition of territorial integrity. And this is already the subject of a peace agreement,” Mirkadyrov said.
According to the expert, theoretically there are no special obstacles for the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. However, in practice, this will create serious problems for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
“The conclusion of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia will mean that both sides recognize the territorial integrity of each other within the existing borders, and so on. But this is precisely what is fraught with serious problems for Pashinyan in Armenia. Because, in fact, the opposition will declare that he handed over Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan."
The signing of a peace agreement will inevitably become a pretext for demagoguery and will be actively used against Pashinyan by his opponents, the expert is sure. –0—
