Azerbaijan needs to dispute territories in a dispute with Armenia, expert

Baku/20.05.21/Turan: In the demilitarization and demarcation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, the Armenian side is most concerned about the issue of the “Zangezur Corridor”. In the future, even if these territories de jure remain part of Armenia, their de facto attachment to Azerbaijan will grow even more, Jasur Sumarinli, head of the Khazar Military Research Center, stated in the “Difficult Question” program of Turan agency.

However, before discussing the issue of borders, Sumarinli commented on a video in which Azerbaijani soldiers, using swearing, rudely expel Armenian soldiers from the territory.  According to the head of the Center, this behavior does not suit the victorious soldier.

“And without that, external pressure is being exerted on Azerbaijan. The video gives the impression that the aggressor is Azerbaijan, not Armenia. It should not be allowed that international public opinion could turn against Azerbaijan. It can also form a misconception about the Azerbaijani soldier,” Sumarinli explains his position.

The head of the Center says that the definition of the borders between the two countries this is the most important question, as it removes future conflicts once and for all. "Determining the boundaries in itself means giving future generations a future without wars, conflicts. You cannot leave the source of conflict for the future," Sumarinli says.

In his opinion, Azerbaijan can dispute a number of territories in relations with Armenia. The reason is that at different times a certain part of the territories of Azerbaijan was transferred to Armenia.

He emphasizes that 7 villages in Zangezur, Gazakh-Tovuz regions, the village of Kyarki in Nakhchivan can be contested.

According to him, the Armenian side is also aware of this, therefore, in order to avoid territorial losses, it uses the term territorial integrity and tries to win patrons for itself.

Sumarinli says that the Armenian side is most of all concerned about the issue of the "Zangezur Corridor". He adds that Armenia is an economically poor state,

Azerbaijan, with its economic power, will gradually draw these territories into the sphere of its economic influence. In his words, in the end, even if the territory de jure remains a part of Armenia, de facto it will take into account the interests of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia.

The head of the Center says that Armenia wants to aggravate the situation in order to avoid territorial losses, and this is not beneficial for Russia; it has chosen the path of resolving the determination of borders through maps, without war.

In his opinion, the Azerbaijani side should dispute more territories from Armenia in order to resolve the border issue in its favor. -05B-
