Oxfam embarking on a project to support producers of onions
Baku/18.10.13/Turan : Manufacturers of vegetables that do not have any interest groups at the local or the national level, always have problems with the study of the needs of the market and therefore occasionally have difficulty in growing certain types of vegetables. No exception are farmers producing onions, whom the humanitarian organization Oxfam Azerbaijan tried to unite in Baku to study the existing problems and to resolve the situation .
The event was presented to the note investors and processors report cost-effectiveness of care of onions. Expert economist Mahmoud Jafarov told about the prospects of the business.
According to the State Statistics Committee , in 2012 the sown area under onions fell from 13.1 per thousand to 11.6 thousand hectares. The volume of production fell from 182.5 thousand to 166.2 thousand tons. The highest rate of onion production in the country was recorded in 2007 - 191 thousand tons.
This year, a kilogram of onions was sold in the market at 50-60 gepiks . This is about 40% higher than last year . The rise in prices could be linked with a reduction in the area under the bow .
