Baku/18.12.21/Turan: On December 18, the country's General Prosecutor's Office issued an extensive report, confirming the facts of gross lawlessness in the army in 2017 when numerous military personnel were tortured and some died on false accusations of state treason.

These facts go back to the so-called "Tartar case" that took place in May-June 2017 in Tartar, Agdam and Beylagan regions.

At that time, a number of servicemen of the Ministry of Defense, in violation of the law, without having an appropriate authority, interrogated fellow servicemen, suspecting them of treason. Those arrested were tortured and some of them died, the Prosecutor General's Office admitted.

Previously, the Military Prosecutor's Office had already initiated five criminal cases against 19 perpetrators, who were convicted.

"Taking into account numerous appeals of the victims, their legal successors and other persons on the course and results of the investigation, a working group was set up by order of the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan on December 16 which requested from the Military Prosecutor's Office all the mentioned criminal cases with the purpose of complete and comprehensive investigation, identification of those responsible and bringing them to justice," the report says.

The special investigative team in charge of re-investigation will consist of prosecutors, Interior Ministry and the State Security Service officers.

The first Deputy Prosecutor General will oversee the investigation, the General Prosecutor's Office said. This agency has rushed to warn the media and users of social networks about responsibility for the dissemination of the data of the preliminary investigation.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, it "influences the course of the investigation, deliberately forms a false opinion in society and undermines the authority of the Azerbaijani army.

It should be noted that the numerous publications in mass media and social networks, as well as street actions of the relatives of the illegally killed servicemen forced the General Prosecutor's Office to admit the gross violations of the rights of numerous servicemen.

So far, law enforcement agencies have claimed that the case has been investigated and all the perpetrators punished. So why has the General Prosecutor's Office gone back on what has already been investigated?

A principal question in this whole story is the role of the Military Prosecutor's Office which has been investigating the case all this time. Where were military prosecutors looking and why were they covering up crimes? That is a question the Prosecutor General's Office should answer instead of telling the media what to write about.

In this whole history we should highlight the role of the leadership of the Defense Ministry which allowed this kind of abuse of power in its ranks, announcing to the world that a wide network of spies working for Armenians has been unmasked within the military. -02B-
