Baku/23.11.22/Turan: On November 23, the head of state Ilham Aliyev paid an official visit to Serbia. After talks in a tête-à-tête format with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, negotiations were held in an expanded format.

As a result of the expanded meeting between President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, a ceremony of signing a number of documents was held.

At the end of the signing ceremony, Aliyev and Vucic made press statements. President Vučić said he expected to pay a working visit to Baku in the next 20 days to continue discussions on a number of critical topics, the Serbian state news agency Tanjug reported. He said he would bring more ministers with him to deepen this strategic partnership through very specific agreements.

Vučić stressed that the two countries have a lot in common, first of all, that they unwaveringly defend their territorial integrity and help each other in the international arena, in international institutions, observing the UN Charter and international legal norms based on this document.

“I’m afraid that today there is little left of international law, and only a few dozen countries adhere to that international public legal order, because we believe that this is the only opportunity and option for the future. I have learned  about this from Aliyev," he stressed.

Vučić noted that by signing the agreement, Serbia and Azerbaijan are raising their cooperation and relations to a new level.

He said that they discussed all the important issues, among which was energy. "That's why we are also working on building an interconnector between Serbia and Bulgaria so that we can buy significant amounts of gas from our friends in Baku."

“Some time ago we joked and Aliyev told me that he couldn’t believe it when he saw that an Azerbaijani company was building a section of the road from Lig to Prelyina for us, and we paid a year ahead of schedule for the work that they are doing without delay. not a day.

“They were surprised when we paid off all the debt a year earlier, everything we borrowed in 2011,” President Vucic said. “Serbia has such a custom that when it can, it repays its debts ahead of schedule. And therefore, he added, it is clear to the Azerbaijani side that Serbia is a reliable partner, just as we know that Aliyev and Azerbaijan are reliable partners not only for us, but for everyone.”

"We must sign agreements on all issues of a transparent protocol, but Aliyev's word is enough for us," President Vučić added.

The Serbian President said that other important issues were also discussed, such as the shortage of fertilizers, and he heard that they are building their petrochemical plants. He added that military-technical cooperation and improvement of interaction in the international arena were also discussed.

Vučić said that the two countries still have a long way to go and that they can do a lot together for the benefit of both peoples.

“We are strategic allies and we have strategic goals,” Vučić said, “we are united in order to protect the territorial integrity of our states.”

Aliyev noted that all international organizations supported the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, but their decisions were selective. “And for 27 years we could not solve the problem. We were forced to use force in accordance with international law to restore our territorial integrity.”

He said that the process of restoring the liberated territories is now underway. “We discussed security and energy issues. We have conditions for the development of cooperation. Azerbaijan has great potential in the energy sector. We signed the relevant documents, and we, as presidents, will observe their implementation,” Aliyev said, noting that he had invited Vucic to visit Azerbaijan in order to deepen the dialogue. Serbian President visited Azerbaijan three years ago.
