Amnesty International: Only "Crime" of Intigam Aliyev - Protection of Rights
The conviction of the human rights defender Intigam Aliyev to 7.5 years in prison shows the desire of the government to silence all the critics in the run-up to the European Games. This has been stated by Amnesty International.
"Intigam Aliyev is one of the latest victims of the campaign in order to hide all the problems in the run-up to the Games. Actions of the authorities should be understood as follows: anyone who dares to talk about problems will be punished," said the Deputy Director of Amnesty International for Europe and Central Asia Denis Krivosheev.
"The only "crime" of Intigam Aliyev is protection of the rights of his fellow citizens. He should not have been arrested. He should be immediately and unconditionally released," the statement noted.
Last week, Amnesty International condemned the sentence of imprisonment for 6.5 years on other human rights defender, Rasul Jafarov.
The organization believes that the Azerbaijani prisons have at least 20 "prisoners of conscience" and calls for their immediate and unconditional release. -16D-
