Army Ousts Egyptian President

Ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi has been placed under house arrest, reports CNN citing Assistant to the President Gahad al-Haddad.

According to the assistant, the Presidential Guard arrested Mursi. He is now at the headquarters of the Presidential Guard. Members of the presidential administration were also arrested.

In a video broadcast by Al Jazeera, Mursi said he is still the legitimate leader of the country and called on supporters to defend the law. However, he asked them to do so peacefully and without violence.

Earlier, leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested, including the supreme mentor of the organization, Rashad al-Bayoumi and the head of the political wing of the movement, the Party of Justice and Development, Saad Qahtani. These politicians are close to the deposed president of Egypt. Additionally, authorities arrested another 300 "Muslim brothers."

It was reported earlier that the country has stopped broadcasting several Islamist television channels - Egypt-25, Hafez and Al-Nas. The head of the Muslim Brotherhood owned Egypt-25 channel was arrested.

Yesterday, Egypt's army suspended the constitution and announced a shift of Mursi from his post. According to the military’s plan, the country's interim government and the Commission for the preparation of early presidential elections will be formed.

Meanwhile, 8 people have been killed in clashes between Mursi supporters and security forces; more than 300 people sustained injuries. Riots have broken out in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities. -02D-
