Arrested youth activists subjected to pressure
The Public Association, "No political prisoners in Azerbaijan," organized a round table discussion on Thursday on "The Life of young people - the future of the country, in danger."
During the debate, which took place at the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety, it was generally felt that the authorities choose tactics of harsh repression against active youth who try to play a role in the political life of the country.
The head of the Association and a former political prisoner, Elshan Hasanli, said that the wave of repression has affected believers, media workers, and youth activists.
All of these people have suffered because they want democratic change in the country.
In a short time, dozens of young people were arrested on trumped up and false charges. The condition of many of them in custody is a justified concern.
Panelists expressed an opinion that by suppressing the youth, the authorities are trying to bring down their activity, intimidate them and to deter them from participating in the political struggle. Such actions are explained by the fear the authorities have in the ability of young people to become the leading force of protest on the eve of the election and lead the whole society.
Parents of the activist Tural Abbasli of Musavat and Zaur Gurbanly of the movement NIDA, speaking at the hearing, said that their children are exposed to inhumane treatment and pressure, and they are not allowed independent physicians.
Human rights activist, Novella Jafaroglu, confirmed that she thinks torture is happening and has informed the relevant state bodies and international organizations, including the embassy.
Panelists shared the view of the need to monitor and document all violations of the rights of arrested activists and protecting their rights.
In the future, it is necessary to seek punishment for those officials who are executing illegal orders and commands.
In conclusion, it was decided by statement, to demand the authorities of the country to put an end to all illegal arrests and repression. -05C-

The organization noted that Abilov, a citizen of Azerbaijan and a lecturer at Belarusian State University, was arrested in July of this year on charges of "high treason," "calls against the state," and "inciting interethnic hatred." This situation raises alarms about the state of academic freedom and the safety of scholars in Azerbaijan.
