Azerbaijani Expatriates Come Together in Europe
A constituent meeting of a new organization of Azerbaijani political refugees - AND (Azerbaijan Needs Democracy) was held in Strasbourg on September 11.
The meeting was attended by political activists, journalists and former government officials and human rights activists at various times forced to leave Azerbaijan because of the persecution by the authorities.
The working meeting was attended by the head of the National Council of Democratic Forces, Jamil Hasanli.
The AND founders have not yet spread information about the structure, the composition, the program or the objectives of the organization. However, it can be already called probably the most significant step in the formation of the Azerbaijani political opposition abroad.
The coordination of the Azerbaijani emigration will have a significant influence on the formation of opinions on the situation in Azerbaijan in the international organizations such as the UN, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and others.
In the case of successful organization of the AND activity, it will become a major headache for the authorities in Baku.
With high probability we can assume that the ranks of immigrant organizations will actively expand and a branch of AND will appear in the United States.
The history and experience of the existence of such expatriate organizations teaches that an important issue is security, because the authorities through their security services always try to send their agents to them. Similar processes will also most probably take place now. -02B-

Comments made by the head of the FSB of Russia, Alexander Bortnikov, claiming that the EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia is engaged in intelligence activities against Russia and Iran, are "utter nonsense, lies, and manipulation typical of the Russian regime, which is trying to cover up its repeated failure to fulfill obligations to Armenia and promises made", Peter Stano, a representative of the European External Action Service, stated in response to Bortnikov's remarks in Astana during a meeting of security heads from CIS countries.
