Azerbaijan's second gold medal at the Olympic Games
Judoist Zelim Kotsoyev has brought Azerbaijan its second gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. He won the Games in the 100kg weight category, defeating Georgian representative Ilia Sulamanidze in the final.
Earlier, on 29 July, another judoist Hidayat Heydarov (73 kg) brought Azerbaijan its first gold medal.
Another medal for Azerbaijan was secured by Cuban Alfonso Dominguez of Cuba, who made it to the semi-finals of the boxing competition. His opponent in the semi-finals will be Spaniard Emmanuel Reyes Pla. The fight will take place on 4 August.

The condition of the arrested Fazil Gasimov, who has been on hunger strike for the 49th day in a medical facility of the Penitentiary Service for the 49th day, remains critical, his lawyer Rovshana Rahimova told Turan after visiting Gasimov on August 1.

On September 1, 1,489 people applied to the district election commissions to nominate candidates for deputies in the early elections to the Milli Majlis. Of these, 481 candidates have already been registered, the head of this structure, Mazahir Panahov, said at today's meeting of the CEC. According to him, 958 of the nominated candidates are non-party, 531 have a party affiliation.

Former diplomat Emin Ibrahimov, who is being held in the Shuvelan pre-trial detention center-3, is on a hunger strike for the 9th day in protest against unjustified arrest. He intends to continue the hunger strike until the termination of his criminal prosecution, Ibrahimov's relatives told Turan. In turn, human rights defender Rufat Safarov said that Ibrahimov was threatened by fellow inmates on the instructions of the administration of the pre-trial detention center.
