Baku Hosts Meeting for the Working Group on Caspian Status

Baku/11.09.13/Turan : Today in Baku, the 33rd meeting for the Working Group of Caspian countries began its work to determine the status of the Caspian Sea. The meeting is conducted by deputy foreign ministers .

A Turan correspondent said the meeting will last two days and will discuss the Convention provisions on the Status of the Caspian Sea .

Participants in the meeting are: the Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, the envoy of the Russian Federation regarding the demarcation and delimitation of the state border Igor Bratchikov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Sarybai, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh , while Turkmenistan is represented by the head of the State Enterprise for Caspian issues at Presidential Office Murad Atadjanov .

Note negotiations on this subject have lasted for many years. Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia have agreed to divide the seabed along a modified median line, and leave the surface of the sea for common use.

Iran needs to give 20% of the sea surface. Turkmenistan can not negotiate with Azerbaijan on the definition of the median line, which is why the two countries can not share the disputed oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea . -16/03D04-
