European Court Starts Communication in Anar Mammadli Case

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has started communication in the case of the head of the Center for Monitoring Elections and Democracy Studies (CMEDS) Anar Mammadli.

The lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan the complaint was filed in connection with the violation of the rights of Mammadli enshrined in Article 5 (right to liberty and security) and 6 (right to a fair trial).

According to the information on the ECHR website, the applicant substantiated the violation of his rights with illegal arrest. Also indicated is the invalidity of rejecting the applicant’s applications to replace his arrest by house arrest.

* Anar Mammadli was arrested on 17 December 2013. The Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced him to five and a half years in prison for illegal business, malpractice and tax evasion.

Amnesty International declared Mammadli a prisoner of conscience. He was awarded the Prize of Vaclav Havel. -16D-
