France Closely Monitoring Leyla Yunus Case - Ambassador
The French government is closely monitoring the case of the convicted human rights activist Leyla Yunus, who was awarded the Order of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. This was stated by the Ambassador of France Aurelia Boucher, responding to a question from Turan whether the French side discussed Yunus’s fate with the Azerbaijani government.
The Ambassador noted that freedom of expression and human rights are very important to France. The President of France, Francois Hollande met with her during his visit to Baku.
Paris is satisfied with the release of her husband Arif Yunus from detention and continues to closely monitor the Leyla Yunus case, said the Ambassador.
* Leyla and Arif Yunus were arrested last summer. In August, they were sentenced to 8.5 and 7 years in prison on charges of economic crimes.
