Georgia may refuse participation in the Baku-Kars project
Tbilisi/21.12.12/Turan-BS PRESS: Refusal to participate in the construction of a railway linking Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku will distance Georgia from Europe, and will link it with Russia, said President Mikheil Saakashvili on December 21. He was commenting on the latest statement by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Bidzin Ivanishvili, regarding the proposed project.
In an interview with the newspaper "Resonance", published on 21 December, the Prime Minister said that the construction of the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway produces a number of issues.
"Perhaps, there are questions on this topic I have to ask during my visit to Azerbaijan, and very gently explain to our friendly country that at some point it may not be useful for us and needs to be regulated," said Ivanishvili.
"I am not satisfied with the statement of the Prime Minister on the possible revision and suspension of the Kars-Akhalkalaki railway. This is the most important project for independent Georgia, which gives the opportunity to connect with Europe, bypassing Russia, taking into account the fact that Georgia is committed to EU integration. This Statement by the Prime Minister distances us from Europe and connects us to a crippling relationship with Russia," Saakashvili said.
He stressed that "the rejection of the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku is not in the strategic interests of Georgia." "If this is true, then it is clear why (Russian President) Putin welcomed the positive signals from the government of Georgia. I insist on this discussion in society, and the government itself has not taken a position on this direction", said Mikhail Saakashvili.
On December 26 Ivanishvili will be arriving in Baku. -02D-
