Another group of rioters in Guba convicted

On Friday, the regional court of Guba convicted another seven people accused of participating in the riot in Guba on March 1. 

The court sentenced Habil Aliyev to 4.5 years in prison, and Safar Garibov to 1.5 years in prison. Another five defendants: Akif Aliyev, Telman Dadashev, Samir Abdullayev, Mamedhasan Akperov were sentenced to three years (conditionally).

All were found guilty of violation of public order, resisting police, and causing property damage. Habil Aliyev was also convicted of hooliganism.

The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the defendants to real terms from five to 5.5 years in prison.

This is the third group of people convicted from the March 1 Guba events. Previously, two groups of 17 people were convicted, four of whom got real sentences, and the remainder probation.

* On March 1, 2012, several thousand residents of the Guba region staged a rally demanding the resignation of Rauf Khabibov, a Chief Executive of the region, who had publicly insulted the locals. The protest turned into a riot, Khabibov’s villa was burned, and damage was caused to the building of the executive power.  A total of four groups of defendants consisting of 30 people were brought to trial.—06B—
