Ilgar Mammadov Calls on Council of Europe to Freeze Activities of Azerbaijani Government
Baku / 03.01.20 / Turan: Chairman of the Republican Alternative Party (ReAl) Ilgar Mammadov sent a submission to the Council of Europe in connection with the non-enforcement of the decision of the European Court of Human Rights. Mammadov believes that the Azerbaijani authorities deliberately ignore the decision of the ECHR on his acquittal.
For this reason, Mammadov cannot run as a candidate for parliamentary elections on February 9, 2020. Mammadov recalls that on May 29, 2019, the ECHR decided that Azerbaijan did not fulfill its obligation to the Council of Europe.
Last year, the CE Committee of Ministers provided Azerbaijan with time until December 31, 2020 to annul the court sentences against 8 activists. However, this was also not implemented.
Based on this and guided by Articles 3 and 8 of the Statute of the Council of Europe, Mammadov suggests starting procedures for freezing the rights of the Azerbaijani government in the Council of Europe. –06D-
