Ilham Aliyev about the April 2016 battles
Baku/02.04.19/Turan: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited the Special Purpose Military Unit of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan. Speaking to the personnel, Aliyev noted the successful development of the Azerbaijani army, equipping it with the most modern technicians and weapons.
Recalling the 3rd anniversary of the April 2016 battles, Aliyev called them "the glorious page of our history", "historical victory", "one of the most successful military operations in our modern history."
During the April wars, thousands of hectares of Agderi, Fizuli and Jebrail regions were liberated from invaders.
Following the successes of the April war, the Azerbaijani army took control of the strategic heights in the Nakhchivan sector.
According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan"s position on resolving the conflict remains unchanged.
"This conflict can be resolved only within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan," he said. The whole world recognizes Nagorno-Karabakh as an integral part of Azerbaijan and this is reflected in the resolutions and decisions of all authoritative international organizations.
"No country recognized and I am convinced that it does not recognize the so-called "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic", said Aliyev. Therefore, the main purpose of the negotiations is the liberation of the occupied territories.
Aliyev reminded that the new leadership of Armenia wanted to change the format of the talks. However, the unequivocal position of Azerbaijan did not allow it.
"The conflict is between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Our territories are occupied by Armenia.
80% of the population in the occupied territories are Armenian citizens. Therefore, negotiations should be conducted and are conducted between the two countries. The last Vienna meeting was important because it once again confirmed the existing format," Aliyev said.
"Right and justice, historical, however, is on our side. Economic and military power is also our side. The work carried out in recent years, reforms in the military field, increased military power, successes on political and military grounds even more inspire us, further strengthen," the head of Azerbaijan said. -06D--

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.
