Journalist Filming Unusual Protest Fined at 200 Manats

Today the Imishli district court sentenced the regional correspondent for the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty Azer Ali to an administrative penalty in the amount of 200 manats.

The same punishment was subjected to then local activist of the opposition Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (PFP), Vugar Gadirov.

They were arrested in Imishli on May 10 during the protest of the Depot district residents, who, as a sign of protest against the lack of pasture for grazing, brought about 150 head of animals to the city center. The police blocked the path of this unusual procession on Heydar Aliyev Avenue in Imishli and prevented journalists to shoot the action.

The journalist Ali, the activist Gadirov and several other people were arrested and spent about 5 hours in the District Police Station. They were released only in the evening, and obliged to come to the court on Saturday at 15.00.

The lawyer Anar Gasymly from Baku, who defended the rights of both, said in an interview with Turan that the trial was not impartial. Police themselves were the witnesses, which gave contradictory evidence, according to the lawyer.

Gasymly said that the court decision will be challenged in the Court of Appeal.

However, he stressed that in fact the rights of the journalist of Radio Freedom to perform his professional duties were violated.  -06D -
