Stone Dreams Discussed at George Washington University

The Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Affairs at George Washington University hosted a discussion of Stone Dreams – a book by the Azerbaijani writer Akram Aylisli.

Recall that the hero of the piece condemns acts of violence against Armenians in Baku during the beginning of the Karabakh conflict and inter-ethnic violence of the early 20th century in his home village Aylisli.

The book was received with hostility in Azerbaijan. Many people denounced the author of a unilateral approach and coverage of crimes of Armenians against Azerbaijanis.

Aylisli was stripped of the title People's Writer and the presidential pension.

Lecturer in the Department of History at Georgetown University Mikail Mammadov noted that the product caused serious protests in Azerbaijan. He expressed the opinion that if the Armenian side took similar steps, it would help the peace process.

The Azerbaijani politician Ulvi Ismayil said Aylisli is known outside of Azerbaijan and his books have been translated into the languages of the peoples of Eastern Europe, and they have been filmed and put on performances.

The Armenian expert Arsene Haratyan believes that despite the negative reaction in society, in the long term the work by Aylisli will be useful. He noted that Stone Dreams is not a historical, but artistic work, and gave examples of international literature.

Haratyan noted that the presence of such writers as Aylisli in both societies will promote tolerance in relations between the two nations. The Forum was concluded with a question and answer session. -03D06-
